ABOUT ME

As a wedding pro, blogging is one of the best ways to showcase your expertise, attract your dream clients, and boost your website’s SEO. But if you’ve ever stared at a blank screen, wondering how to structure your blog post or make it SEO-friendly, you’re not alone. That’s where I come in! As a digital marketing expert specializing in SEO-driven blogging for wedding pros, I help creative entrepreneurs like you craft personality-packed, strategic blog content that Google will love.

In this guide, I’ll walk you through exactly how to write a wedding blog post that is well-structured, SEO-friendly, and packed with personality. Whether you’re blogging a real wedding or you’re sharing educational content on a wedding industry topic, you can use these tips and tricks to help you write blog content that actually boosts your business!

Step 1: Decide on Your Blog Topic, Title & Keywords

Before you start typing, you need a strategic topic, title, and target keyword. It’s SO easy to simply blog about what you happen to be thinking about. But the ultimate goal is to write about what your ideal clients are actively searching for online so you can show up on the first page of their Google search results. Your chosen target keyword or keyphrase should shape EVERYTHING else about your post in order to get Google’s attention. Here’s how to do this!

Do Your Keyword Research

Use keyword research tools to find out what your ideal clients are searching for. There are free tools you can use like Google’s autocomplete function and Google Trends, Moz Keyword Explorer, Exploding Topics, and Answer the Public. One of my favorites is a tool called Ubersuggest. I use the paid version, but their free version is still a huge step up from most free tools, in my opinion!

The key is to focus on keywords that fit your expertise and have low competition so you have a better chance of ranking high—a bigger fish in a smaller pond! Don’t be afraid to get specific and niche down in terms of your target keyword. Even if only a few people are searching for that term each month, if it’s a perfect fit for you, being seen by those few searchers on the first page can make all the difference!

Answer Clients’ Questions

Think about what your ideal clients are asking. Are they wondering how to choose a wedding photographer? How to create a stress-free wedding timeline? Keywords formatted as questions are great because they’re super specific and you can provide a clear ANSWER within the blog post. Also, with the rise of smart home devices and AI search, more people are speaking and typing their questions in real-person language, like how they actually talk. Question keywords will capture those voice searches best!

Craft a Strategic Blog Post Title

A strategic blog post title will be clear, descriptive, and include your target keyword (bonus points if the keyword is near the beginning of the title). Your blog post title is not the time to be “cutesy” or include an abstract turn of phrase. Remember, everything revolves around the words people are typing into Google! Instead of something vague like “Amy & Tyler’s Romantic Wedding Day,” try “A Dusty Blue Spring Wedding at XYZ Venue in CityName.” (Pro tip: include the venue name—they’re some of the most searched-for phrases when couples are wedding planning!)

Step 2: Gather Your Content & Brainstorm Unique Angles

Once you have your topic, gather all the necessary details. If it’s a real wedding blog post, think about the couple’s unique story, standout details, and how you personally helped make their vision come to life. If it’s an educational post, consider your unique take on the subject. What have you learned from your experience in the industry that the average engaged couple wouldn’t know?

The more personal and detailed you can be, the more engaged your readers will be. This is the time to show your personality and showcase your brand voice! People want to know the person behind the business. Play up what sets you apart and how you uniquely serve clients. Think to yourself “Is this the same post my competitor could have written?” If the answer is yes, think of ways you can insert your personal voice and experiences more.

Step 3: Write Copy Using SEO Best Practices

Now it’s time to write! Your blog should be easy to read and structured in a way that Google understands. This isn’t high school English class—complex is NOT better! Aim for simple, short sentences and scannable content that is easy on the eyes. Bulleted lists, short paragraphs, and lots of broken up sections are best for online writing.

Use Headings Strategically

Google and readers both love well-organized content. Your structure and use of headings acts as an outline that Google will use to understand your post. Use plenty of H2 and H3 headings to break up text in a hierarchy that makes sense. Think of them as mini headlines that make your post scannable. They give visual breaks and create perfect opportunities for inserting images between blocks of text. Headings are some of the most important SEO elements that many people ignore!

Incorporate SEO Keywords Naturally

Use your target keyword everywhere you can—in your introduction, headings, and body copy! But remember: Google favors non-spammy, useful content. It can recognize when you’re “keyword stuffing” in a way that doesn’t feel natural and it will actually work against you. Search engines are also smart enough to recognize synonyms, so you can vary up the structure of your keyword phrase to sound less repetitive.

Write in Your Unique Voice

Your blog is a reflection of your brand. Whether you’re a bubbly planner or a sophisticated photographer, let your personality shine through in your writing. This is your place to help future clients get to know you and your work. Why should they hire you and not your closest competitor? Sometimes it truly comes down to who they vibe with, and you can help them along that journey by being true to yourself in your blog post copy!

Step 4: Choose & Optimize Your Images for SEO

Images are a huge part of wedding blog posts, but most wedding pros already know that! It can be tempting to throw an entire gallery of photos into a blog post, but that’s usually not a good idea. You want to carefully curate the images that tell the story of the day without becoming overwhelming. Your photos work alongside your words to communicate the vibe of the wedding, your shooting and editing style, and the timeline of events. Of course, they also need to be optimized for SEO!

Here are some image SEO tips to remember:

  • Curate 30-50 Images: Narrow down your images to walk readers through the event without unnecessary repetition. Any more than 50 and readers will be tempted to just gloss over them and scroll past!
  • Resize Before Uploading: Keep image files under 1GB to improve page load speed. This is an often-overlooked SEO factor that Google takes seriously.
  • Use SEO-Friendly Filenames: Rename files to include your keyword and business name (like “dusty-blue-wedding-xyz-photography.jpg”). Don’t forget to rename BEFORE you upload into your blogging platform so you can do them in bulk more easily. (If you’re working on a Mac, select all the photos in your finder and right click for the rename feature—it’s so easy!)
  • Add Alt Text in Your Blogging Platform: Describe what’s happening in the image so Google can understand it. Think about what search terms should lead to this image. Also think about what a visually impaired person using a screen reader would need to know about the image for the blog post to make sense. Improving accessibility is a big factor here!

Step 5: Structure Your Post for Scannability & Engagement

A great blog post isn’t just a wall of text followed by a gallery—it should be engaging and visually interesting. Say it with me: you’re telling the story of the day! Start with a brief introduction paragraph that sets up the couple/wedding day or educational topic. Include your keyword and a quick bit that brings your personal experience into the post. A few sentences is enough!

For the main body of the post, you’re going to see why I told you to use lots of short sections broken up by H2 headings. This allows you to include a block of images after each main paragraph, illustrating just that one part of the day. This structure helps you choose what images to include and where. They need to fit with the content!

Conclude with a short paragraph that ties everything together, repeats your keyword, and includes a call to action (CTA) that is hyperlinked. This CTA could be to fill out an inquiry form, check out your services, or download your free resource.

Step 6: Implement the Finishing SEO Touches

Before you hit publish, don’t forget these final SEO elements:

  • Write a Meta Description: This is what shows up in Google search results and in the little teaser when  you share a link on social media—it’s super important! Your metadescription should be under 156 characters (including spaces) and it should include your keyword. Think about this as if the person reading it has never heard of you before.
  • Optimize the URL Slug: Keep it short and remove filler words. For instance, use “/dusty-blue-spring-wedding-venuename-city” instead of “/a-dusty-blue-spring-wedding-at-venuename-in-city.”
  • Assign a Blog Category: Blog categories help organize your content and improve searchability on your site. I personally recommend having just a few “big bucket” categories to choose from, and simplifying or ditching tags altogether. Most blog post page formats don’t show tags at all, and I’ve found them less and less helpful as time has gone on. A few strong categories that each have a landing archive page is my recommendation!
